SOL strengthens its Breakbulk organization. With the introduction of the new role of Operations Manager, even greater emphasis is being placed on day-to-day operational coordination related to the vessels. Jonathan Andersson explains the setup and outlines the shipping experience he brings to the role.

“As Operations Manager, I am responsible for all daily operational matters – ensuring that the vessels receive our instructions and carry out their assignments as planned. In Breakbulk, this primarily involves transporting sawn timber from Sweden and Finland to Alexandria, Egypt, and then backloading the vessels in the Mediterranean for the return voyage to the Bay of Bothnia. The trade includes both contract and spot cargo, where matching the right cargo volume to each vessel is essential.

The key aspects of my job are clear, precise communication and staying one step ahead at all times. The objective is to have the vessels loaded as quickly and safely as possible. This requires close coordination primarily with agents, who in turn liaise with the stevedores. I also have some contact with cargo owners and stevedores directly, though less frequently. The agent is our representative in port, and the process begins with voyage instructions, where I specify what is to be loaded in each port. The goal is to maximize cargo intake without compromising safety or causing cargo damage. One of my responsibilities is ensuring that there is sufficient lashing equipment available to secure the timber packages so that they can be loaded and transported safely. Both during loading and discharging, we strive to complete operations as efficiently as possible to minimize port time.

Once the vessel is underway, I maintain frequent contact with the captain to ensure everything is proceeding as planned and to provide support if required, for example, identifying an alternative route if adverse weather conditions necessitate a change in the sailing plan. I also verify that the vessel is maintaining the correct speed and keep the agent informed so that the next loading operation can be adjusted accordingly. Another important task is arranging bunkering, ensuring that a bunker barge or truck is available in the right port.

I have spent my entire professional career in the shipping industry—previously working as an agent and client coordinator before joining SOL—and I have been involved in these operational matters at SOL since 2022. Coordination and oversight are things I am very accustomed to and genuinely enjoy. Cost calculations and financial follow-up are also a personal interest of mine, which makes this role particularly rewarding. The position offers a high degree of autonomy combined with responsibility, which suits me well. For everyone working with us, my new role also provides clarity regarding who to contact, whether for day-to-day operational matters or financial issues.”
